Character of the shape
Why an oval diamond
The oval diamond uses a brilliant cut, thanks to which it returns light with a sparkle very close to that of the round brilliant. Its elongated outline visually lengthens the finger and, at the same weight, appears larger than a round diamond.
It is a rewarding choice for anyone who wants a radiant, timeless shape with a gently individual character. It looks superb in a classic solitaire as well as in an east–west orientation.
What to focus on
The bow-tie and symmetry
With an oval cut, watch for the so-called "bow-tie" effect — a darker band running across the centre of the diamond. A subtle hint is common in all elongated cuts, but a pronounced, dark bow-tie detracts from the sparkle. That is why we select diamonds in which this effect is minimal.
Symmetry and a balanced length-to-width ratio are equally important. A symmetrical outline ensures the diamond looks harmonious and even. A GIA, IGI or HRD certificate from 0.30 ct will also give you independent verification of colour and clarity quality.
Setting and metal
How to set an oval diamond
An oval diamond suits a solitaire with four or six prongs that lets the outline shine, as well as a surround of smaller diamonds (halo) that visually adds size. A three-stone arrangement is also popular.
In white gold or platinum, a clean, cool radiance comes to the fore, while yellow and rose gold lend the diamond a warmer tone. We are happy to design the specific execution to measure.
