White Gold Engagement Rings

In an engagement ring the metal is the frame for the diamond — and the cool, neutral sheen of white gold lets the diamond stand out without competing with it through a warm glow. That is exactly why it is such a popular choice for both the solitaire and the halo.

We finish the deeply white surface with rhodium plating and offer the work in both 14k and 18k — compared clearly below.

What makes this selection different

Why white gold for an engagement ring

In an engagement ring the lead role belongs to the diamond — and the metal's task is to give it the right frame. The cool, slightly silvery tone of white gold lets the diamond's brilliance shine without competing with it through a warm glow the way yellow gold does. It shows off colourless diamonds best, where purity of tone matters.

At the same time it is versatile: it suits any skin tone and setting style and looks both classic and modern. The deeply white appearance is created by rhodium plating — a thin galvanic layer of rhodium that we offer to renew at any time as part of our service, so that the diamond shines like it did on the day of the engagement even years later.

Why white gold for an engagement ring

14k vs 18k white gold and rhodium plating

We work with both purity grades routinely, and for an engagement ring the choice is mainly about how firmly the setting will hold the diamond and how the ring will pair with the wedding band later on. The main differences between 14k and 18k are summarised clearly in the table below.

The deeply white appearance of both variants is created by rhodium plating — a thin layer of rhodium applied to the surface. Over time it naturally wears down and the warmer tone of the alloy may show through at points of contact. This is not a defect but the nature of the material. We offer renewal of the rhodium layer and re-polishing of the setting as part of our service, so the ring can be restored to its original look again and again.

Which diamond suits white gold

The cool sheen of white gold is the ideal frame for a diamond — it shows off colourless diamonds in the D–F range best, where the neutral metal disturbs nothing and the brightness stays pure. With diamonds from 0.30 ct we include an independent GIA, IGI or HRD certificate, for both natural and lab-grown diamonds — we describe both options neutrally and leave the decision to you.

Brilliant, oval and emerald cuts all come through beautifully. The diamond can be set as a clean solitaire, surrounded by a delicate halo of small diamonds, accented with pavé along the shank or built into a three-stone composition. If you plan to wear the engagement ring alongside a wedding band, we take pairing the two into account already at the design stage. If you are looking for a permanently white shade without rhodium plating, platinum is an alternative.
