Natural Pink Diamonds

Pink diamonds owe their colour to plastic deformation — a structural distortion of the crystal lattice under mantle pressure that absorbs green light and transmits pink, with no trace element involved. The Argyle mine supplied roughly 90 per cent of natural pinks before closing permanently in November 2020; no replacement source has emerged. Colour intensity governs value, with Fancy Vivid Pink commanding some of the highest per-carat prices of any coloured gemstone.
