Yellow tints that push a diamond below the J–K range on the GIA D-to-Z scale can halve its price overnight. Meanwhile, vivid fancy colours — the deep blues, saturated pinks, and electric greens that collectors pursue — occur so rarely that most jewellers never handle one.

Diamond color treatment bridges this gap. Through controlled physical and chemical processes, skilled technicians can shift a diamond's hue: lighten an unwanted brown, deepen a pale yellow into a vivid canary, or introduce a blue or green that nature produces only once in thousands of carats. The result is a stone that looks dramatically different from the rough it started as — sometimes indistinguishable from a natural fancy colour to the unaided eye.

The Five Methods

Annealing After Irradiation

Controlled heating of an irradiated diamond — typically between 500°C and 1,000°C — causes the vacancy defects to migrate and combine with nitrogen atoms, creating entirely new colour centres. This shifts the diamond's hue along a predictable sequence: blue-green gives way to brown, then orangey-yellow, then yellow. At higher temperatures, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres can form, producing the rare pinks and reds that command extraordinary premiums in their natural form.

This two-step process (irradiate, then anneal) is the most versatile colour treatment available, capable of producing a wider palette than any single method. The treatment is permanent and stable.

HPHT Treatment

High Pressure, High Temperature processing recreates the conditions of diamond formation itself — 5 to 6 GPa of pressure at 1,300–1,600°C. Its most celebrated application is converting brown Type IIa diamonds to colourless or near-colourless grades. A stone that entered the press as a J-colour brown can emerge as a D or E, its lattice defects from plastic deformation effectively healed.

HPHT can also push Type Ia diamonds toward yellow or, more rarely, produce green hues. The treatment is irreversible. Detection requires advanced photoluminescence spectroscopy, making it one of the harder treatments to identify without laboratory equipment.

Coating

The simplest and oldest approach: applying a thin film to the diamond's surface — typically the pavilion facets — to alter its apparent colour. Modern coatings range from silica-based films doped with gold or silver oxide (the "Serenity" treatment) to boron-doped CVD diamond layers that produce a convincing blue.
