Not every diamond reaches the market as nature made it. Some are treated — subjected to controlled physical or chemical processes that alter their colour, reduce the visibility of inclusions, or change their appearance in ways that make them more commercially attractive. Treatments are not inherently deceptive, but they must always be disclosed, because a treated diamond is a fundamentally different proposition from an untreated one.

The diamond treatment landscape divides into two categories. Colour treatments modify the hue of a stone — turning brown diamonds colourless, deepening pale yellows into vivid canaries, or introducing blues and greens that nature produces only rarely. Clarity treatments address visible inclusions — either by drilling down to them and bleaching them away, or by filling surface-reaching fractures with a glass-like substance that makes them disappear to the naked eye.

Some of these treatments are permanent and stable. Others are not. The distinction matters enormously: it determines whether a laboratory will issue a grading report, how the diamond should be cared for, what it is worth on the secondary market, and what happens when your jeweller applies a torch during a routine repair.
