The fancy coloured diamond market is a high-value niche that operates by different rules than the colourless diamond market. Where colourless diamonds are commoditised — graded on standardised scales with published price lists — fancy colours trade on rarity, individual stone character, and auction dynamics. No two Fancy Vivid Blue diamonds are interchangeable. No price list tells you what a one-carat Fancy Intense Pink should cost today.

What structures this market is a rarity hierarchy: red at the apex (fewer than 30 known above half a carat), followed by blue, pink, green, orange, and purple at various levels of scarcity, down to yellow and brown with the broadest supply. GIA certification is the universal standard, and a single grade step — Fancy Intense to Fancy Vivid — can double or triple a stone's value.

Auction houses set benchmark prices. Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillips are where the most significant fancy colour diamonds appear publicly. Auction results provide the closest thing to price transparency in a market that otherwise operates through private dealers and bespoke negotiations.

Asia-Pacific demand is the growth engine. Hong Kong auctions frequently set world records. Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asian collectors and investors have become dominant buyers of top-tier fancy colours over the past two decades.

Supply shocks reshape pricing. The closure of Australia's Argyle mine in November 2020 removed approximately 90% of the world's pink and red diamond supply from the market. The effect has been structural — pink diamond prices have trended upward since closure, with no new supply source on the horizon.

Understand that fancy colour pricing is less transparent than colourless — there is no Rapaport equivalent.
Rarity compounds: a rare colour at a rare saturation in a rare size is exponentially scarcer than any single factor alone.
