Where colourless diamonds are commoditised — graded on standardised scales with published price lists — fancy colours trade on rarity, individual stone character, and auction dynamics. No two Fancy Vivid Blue diamonds are interchangeable. No price list tells you what a one-carat Fancy Intense Pink should cost today.

What structures this market is a rarity hierarchy: red at the apex (fewer than 30 known above half a carat), followed by blue, pink, green, orange, and purple at various levels of scarcity, down to yellow and brown with the broadest supply. GIA certification is the universal standard, and a single grade step — Fancy Intense to Fancy Vivid — can double or triple a stone's value.
