Understanding EU Ring Sizes

Arete Diamond uses the European (EU) ring sizing standard. In this system, the size number corresponds directly to the inner circumference of the ring in millimetres. For example, an EU size 54 ring has an inner circumference of exactly 54 mm and an inner diameter of approximately 17.2 mm. This makes the EU system one of the most intuitive and precise sizing systems in the world.

EU Ring Size Chart

The table below shows all standard ring sizes with their corresponding inner diameter and circumference. Find your measurement and match it to the nearest EU size.

EU Size Diameter (mm) Circumference (mm)
44 14.0 44.0
45 14.3 44.9
46 14.6 45.9
47 15.0 47.1
48 15.3 48.1
49 15.6 49.0
50 15.9 50.0
51 16.2 50.9
52 16.5 51.8
53 16.9 53.1
54 17.2 54.0
55 17.5 55.0
56 17.8 55.9
57 18.1 56.9
58 18.5 58.1
59 18.8 59.1
60 19.1 60.0
61 19.5 61.3
62 19.8 62.2
63 20.0 62.8
64 20.3 63.8
65 20.7 65.0
66 21.0 66.0
67 21.3 66.9
68 21.6 67.9
69 21.9 68.8

If your measurement falls between two sizes, always choose the larger one for a more comfortable fit.

Three Ways to Find Your Ring Size

Method 1: Measure an Existing Ring

This is the most reliable method. Choose a ring that fits comfortably on the finger where you intend to wear your new ring.

  1. Place the ring on a flat surface.
  2. Using a ruler with millimetre markings, measure the inside diameter of the ring — the widest point from one inner edge to the other.
  3. Compare your measurement to the diameter column in the chart above to find your EU size.

Important: Make sure the ruler measures the interior of the ring, not the exterior. Even a millimetre difference can shift you by a full size.

Method 2: Measure Your Finger with String or Paper

If you do not have a ring to measure, you can determine your size directly from your finger.

  1. Cut a strip of paper or string approximately 10 cm long.
  2. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger where the ring will sit — not too tight, not too loose.
  3. Mark the point where the end overlaps with a pen.
  4. Lay the paper or string flat against a ruler and measure the length in millimetres up to the mark.
  5. This measurement is your finger circumference. Match it directly to the EU size in the chart — the EU size number equals the circumference in millimetres.

Tip: If using string, avoid stretchy materials. A thin strip of paper gives more consistent results.

Method 3: Order Our Free Ring Sizer

For the most accurate result without visiting a jeweller, we offer a free plastic ring sizer delivered to your address. This is a professional-grade measuring tool — the same type used in jewellery shops.

Simply fill out the request form on our website, and we will send the ring sizer free of charge, including shipping. Once it arrives, slide your finger through the graduated openings until you find the size that feels right — snug enough that it will not slip off, but loose enough to slide comfortably over the knuckle.

We always recommend this method, especially for engagement rings and other significant purchases.

Tips for Accurate Measurement

Getting the right fit is about more than just the number. Follow these guidelines to avoid common mistakes:

  • Measure at the end of the day. Your fingers are naturally slightly larger in the afternoon and evening. Measuring in the morning or when your hands are cold can give a result that is up to half a size too small.

  • Avoid temperature extremes. Cold fingers shrink and hot fingers swell. Measure at normal room temperature for the most reliable result.

  • Repeat 3-4 times. Take multiple measurements at different times of the day and discard any outliers. Consistency across readings gives you confidence in the result.

  • Account for wider bands. A ring with a narrow band (2-3 mm) sits differently than a wide band (6 mm or more). Wider rings feel tighter on the finger. If you are choosing a wide band style, add half to one full EU size to your measurement.

  • If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, measure both the knuckle and the base, then choose a size halfway between the two. The ring needs to pass over the knuckle but still feel secure at the base.

  • If you are between two sizes, always choose the larger one. A slightly loose ring is more comfortable than a tight one, and it is easier to size down than up.

Average Ring Sizes

If you are planning a surprise and cannot measure your partner's finger, these averages can serve as a starting point:

  • Women: EU 50-53 (most common: EU 52)
  • Men: EU 60-63 (most common: EU 62)

You can always order the average size and take advantage of our resizing service within 60 days of receiving the ring.

Is It a Surprise?

Shopping for someone special and need to keep it secret? Here are a few discreet approaches:

  • Borrow a ring they already wear on the same finger and measure its inner diameter using the method above.
  • Trace the inside of their ring on a sheet of paper, then measure the diameter of the circle.
  • Ask a close friend or family member — they may already know the size or can help find out subtly.
  • Check their jewellery box when they are not around and try one of their rings on your own finger, noting how far it goes. This gives you a relative reference.

If all else fails, order the average size. We offer free resizing on most ring styles.

Can Rings Be Resized?

Most gold and platinum rings can be resized by a professional jeweller. However, there are some limitations:

  • Rings with stones set all the way around (full eternity bands) generally cannot be resized because stones would need to be removed.
  • Certain metals such as tungsten and titanium cannot be resized due to their extreme hardness.
  • Significant changes (more than two sizes up or down) may affect the appearance or structural integrity of the ring.

We recommend taking the time to find the right size before ordering. If your ring does need resizing, contact our team — we will guide you through the options.
