The pear shape is a modified brilliant combining the rounded end of an oval with a pointed tip, elongating the finger visually; a 1.50:1 to 1.75:1 length-to-width ratio produces the characteristic teardrop outline. Symmetry is the defining quality criterion — the two curved wings must mirror each other exactly and the point must align with the rounded apex — while the pointed tip concentrates body colour and is structurally vulnerable, requiring a V-prong and careful inspection of the clarity plot for inclusions there.
