Fancy Colored Diamonds

Overview

Diamonds are not only colourless. Nature produces them in virtually every hue — yellow, pink, blue, green, orange, purple, brown, gray, black, and even an opalescent white that resembles opal more than gemstone. Each colour has a different cause written into the stone's atomic structure or geological history: nitrogen atoms absorb blue light to create yellow, boron absorbs red to create blue, millions of years of natural radiation damage produce green, and extreme pressure deforms the crystal lattice into pink, red, or brown.

These are fancy colored diamonds — stones whose colour falls outside the normal D-to-Z grading range or belongs to a hue family that the D-to-Z scale does not cover at all. GIA evaluates them on three dimensions: hue (the basic colour), tone (how light or dark), and saturation (how strong). From these three measurements come nine fancy grades — Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep, and Fancy Dark — and those grades drive value as powerfully as carat weight drives it in the colourless world.
