How Does the Custom Engagement Ring Process Work?

A step-by-step overview from initial concept to finished ring.

The Short Answer

The custom engagement ring process at Arete Diamond follows a clear path: consultation, diamond selection, design and CAD modelling, your approval, manufacturing, and delivery. At every stage, you are involved, informed, and in control. Nothing moves forward until you are ready.

Step 1: Consultation

Everything begins with a conversation. Whether you reach out by email, phone, or through our website, the first step is understanding what you are looking for — and what matters most to you.

This is not a sales call. It is a design conversation. We discuss:

  • Your vision. Do you have a specific style in mind, or are you starting from scratch? Both are perfectly fine.
  • Your partner's preferences. What jewellery do they already wear? Do they gravitate toward classic or contemporary design? What metal do they prefer?
  • Your budget. Understanding your comfortable range early allows us to guide you toward the best combination of diamond and design for your investment.
  • Timeline. If you have a proposal date in mind, we work backward from there to ensure everything is ready.

You do not need to arrive with a finished idea. Many of our clients begin with nothing more than "I want something beautiful" — and that is more than enough to start.

Step 2: Diamond Selection

The diamond is the heart of the ring, and choosing it is one of the most significant decisions in the process.

At Arete, every diamond comes with HD video and detailed specifications that go beyond what appears on the grading report. You can see exactly how the stone looks — its sparkle, its transparency, the way light moves through it — before making your decision. This level of visibility means you can choose with confidence, without needing to handle stones in person.

We guide you through the balance of the four Cs — carat weight, cut quality, colour, and clarity — and help you understand where to prioritise based on your preferences and budget. A well-chosen diamond with excellent cut proportions will always outperform a larger stone with mediocre optics.

Our team selects from GIA-certified diamonds, the industry's most trusted grading standard, so you can be certain of what you are getting.

Step 3: Design and CAD Modelling

Once the diamond is chosen, the design work begins. This is where your ring takes shape — literally.

If you have inspiration images, sketches, or references from rings you have admired, share them. Our design team works from whatever you can provide, translating your vision into a detailed three-dimensional model.

A CAD (computer-aided design) render shows you the ring from every angle: the profile, the top view, the side details, the proportions of the band relative to the stone. You can see how the setting will hold the diamond, where any accent stones will sit, and how the overall design will look on the hand.

This is the stage where refinements happen. If the band feels too wide, we narrow it. If you want to add a hidden halo beneath the centre stone, we show you what that looks like. If the prong style does not feel right, we adjust it. Changes at the CAD stage are straightforward — no metal has been touched, no time has been lost. This is by design.

Step 4: Your Approval

Nothing goes into production without your explicit approval. Once the CAD model reflects exactly what you want — the design, the dimensions, the diamond placement, the metal type — you give the go-ahead.

This checkpoint exists to ensure there are no surprises. The ring that arrives will match the model you approved. What you see is what you get.

Step 5: Manufacturing

With your approval confirmed, production begins. Your ring is manufactured by skilled jewellers using the specifications from the approved design.

This is not assembly-line work. Each ring is made individually — cast, set, finished, and polished by hand. The diamond is secured in its setting with the precision that only hand-setting provides. Every detail from the CAD model is translated into metal and stone.

Manufacturing typically takes four to six weeks, depending on the complexity of the design. This timeline reflects the care involved — casting, setting, finishing, and quality checking cannot be rushed without compromising the result.

Step 6: Quality Check and Delivery

Before the ring reaches you, it undergoes a final quality inspection. We check the setting security, the finish quality, the overall proportions, and ensure the ring matches the approved design in every detail.

Once cleared, the ring is packaged and delivered to you — ready for the moment you have been planning.

What Makes This Process Different

The custom process is not about adding complexity. It is about removing compromise.

With a ready-made ring, you choose from what exists and accept whatever is closest to what you wanted. With a made-to-order process, the ring is built around your choices — your diamond, your design, your specifications. Nothing is approximate.

At Arete, the process is also personal. You are not navigating a website alone or dealing with a rotating cast of sales associates. You work with a consistent team from start to finish — people who know your project, your preferences, and your timeline.
