Labbodlade blå diamanter får sin färg från bor som förs in i HPHT-tillväxtmiljön och ersätter kolatomer för att skapa en Type IIb-diamant vars gitter selektivt absorberar rött och gult ljus och ger en jämn, mättad blå färg direkt när kristallen bildas, utan att någon efterbehandling krävs. Eftersom färgen är inneboende i stenens struktur från tillväxten är nyansen stabil och enhetlig. Intensitetsbetyget förblir den primära värdeskillnaden över spannet Fancy Light till Fancy Vivid.
