Overview

A diamond grading report is only as reliable as the laboratory that issued it. The grades on the document — colour, clarity, cut, carat weight — are expert assessments, not absolute measurements. The standards and consistency behind those assessments vary from one laboratory to another, and since diamond pricing is built on grades, the laboratory that assigned them directly affects what you should pay.

Four laboratories dominate the market. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) established the 4Cs system and remains the reference standard. HRD Antwerp, the grading arm of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, serves the European trade with comparable rigour. The International Gemological Institute (IGI), the largest laboratory by volume, has become the primary authority for lab-grown diamonds. Beyond these three, smaller laboratories — AGS, GCAL, and others — serve specific niches with their own strengths.

Understanding which laboratory graded your diamond is not optional expertise. It is a basic purchasing skill.

Key Concepts

Laboratory Independence

A grading laboratory's credibility rests on its independence from the sale. The lab examines the stone, records its findings, and returns a report. It does not buy, sell, or set prices. This separation between assessment and commerce is what makes the document trustworthy.

Grading Consistency

Grading involves trained human judgment. Borderline cases — a stone between G and H colour, or between VS2 and SI1 — will always produce some variation. What distinguishes a reliable laboratory is how narrow and well-managed that variation is.

GIA's consistency protocols — multiple independent graders, blind submissions, statistical quality control — have made it the pricing benchmark. Market Segmentation

Different laboratories serve different markets, and this is not accidental. GIA's conservative grading and global recognition make it the default for high-value natural diamonds and the international wholesale trade. HRD Antwerp's proximity to Europe's largest diamond exchange makes it the natural choice for stones traded through Antwerp — relevant for Czech buyers sourcing through European channels. IGI's massive global capacity and early investment in lab-grown diamond grading positioned it as the standard in that rapidly growing segment.

Report Verification

Every major laboratory offers free online verification: enter the report number and confirm the grades match the document in your hand. Practical Tips

Default to GIA for natural diamonds above 0.50 ct. If you are spending a significant amount — and in the Czech market, that threshold is roughly 30 000 CZK and up — a GIA report provides the most widely trusted and consistently applied grading. HRD Antwerp is an equally credible alternative, particularly for European-sourced stones.
Accept IGI for lab-grown diamonds. IGI has established itself as the grading standard for lab-grown stones. Its reports are appropriate and widely accepted in that context. For natural diamonds, be aware that IGI grades may run slightly more generous than GIA on colour and clarity.
Never compare grades across laboratories at face value. A G colour on a GIA report and a G colour on a report from a less conservative lab may describe meaningfully different stones. Always verify online before purchasing. Check the report number through the issuing laboratory's verification tool. Confirm the laser inscription matches. These two steps take minutes and protect against altered or fabricated reports.
Ask your jeweller which laboratory they use and why. A knowledgeable seller will explain their laboratory preference. If the answer is "it doesn't matter" or "they're all the same," that is a signal to ask more questions.
