How Long Does a Custom Ring Usually Take to Make?

Typical production timelines for bespoke engagement rings.

The Short Answer

From the moment you approve the final design, manufacturing typically takes four to six weeks. The total timeline — including consultation, diamond selection, and design — depends on how quickly decisions come together, but most clients have their ring in hand within six to eight weeks from first contact.

Where the Time Goes

Four to six weeks can feel like a long time when you are eager to propose. But every day of that timeline serves a purpose. Here is what happens during manufacturing and why it cannot — and should not — be compressed.

Casting. The ring begins as a wax or resin model created from the approved CAD design. This model is used to create a mould, and molten metal — platinum, gold, or the alloy you chose — is cast into that mould. Casting must be done carefully to avoid porosity and imperfections in the metal. Rushing this step produces a weaker ring.

Setting. Once the casting is cleaned and refined, the diamond is set by hand. Whether your ring features a solitaire prong setting, a bezel, or a more complex design with side stones and pavé, each stone is positioned and secured individually. Master setting requires patience and precision — a fraction of a millimetre determines whether a stone is secure and properly aligned.

Finishing. The ring is filed, smoothed, and polished to its final surface quality. If you chose a high-polish finish, this involves multiple stages of progressively finer polishing. A brushed or satin finish requires a different technique entirely. Hand-engraving, milgrain edges, or other decorative details are applied at this stage.

Quality inspection. Before the ring leaves the workshop, it is inspected for setting security, surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and overall consistency with the approved design. If anything falls short, it goes back for correction — not out the door.

What Happens Before Manufacturing

The four-to-six-week manufacturing window only begins after you approve the design. Before that, there are several steps that add to the total timeline:

  • Consultation and diamond selection — this can be as quick as a few days if you know what you want, or a few weeks if you are exploring options. There is no rush here; choosing the right diamond deserves time.
  • Design and CAD modelling — once the diamond is chosen, the design team creates a detailed 3D model. Initial renders typically arrive within a week. Revisions, if needed, add a few more days.
  • Your approval — the design waits for your go-ahead. Some clients approve immediately; others take a few days to reflect.

In total, most projects move from first conversation to finished ring in six to eight weeks. If you know your proposal date, working backward from that date gives you a comfortable planning window.

Can the Process Be Faster?

Sometimes, yes. Simpler designs — a classic solitaire or a clean three-stone ring — require less manufacturing time than an elaborate multi-stone design with intricate metalwork. If the diamond is already selected and the design is straightforward, it is possible to shorten the timeline.

However, we are honest about what speed costs. Compressing the manufacturing schedule beyond what the design requires risks compromising quality — and quality is not something worth sacrificing for a ring that will be worn every day for decades.

If your timeline is tight, tell us early. We can advise on what is realistic and help you plan accordingly.

Planning Around a Proposal Date

If you have a specific date in mind — a holiday, an anniversary, a planned trip — start the conversation early. Eight weeks of lead time is comfortable. Ten weeks is ideal. Six weeks is workable for simpler designs but leaves little room for revisions or unexpected delays.

The single most common source of delay is not manufacturing — it is decision-making. Clients who take their time choosing a diamond or requesting multiple design revisions extend the timeline at the front end. This is perfectly fine if the calendar allows it, but if your date is fixed, decisive action at each stage keeps the project on track.

The Arete Diamond Perspective

We do not rush, and we do not apologise for that. The time invested in manufacturing your ring is an expression of the care behind it. Every step — from casting to final polish — is performed by skilled hands with the attention that custom jewellery demands.

When you receive the finished ring, it will be exactly what you approved, made to the standard you expect. That is worth the wait.
