Introduction

The pear-shaped diamond is one of the most distinctive silhouettes in fine jewellery. Part round brilliant, part marquise, its hybrid geometry creates a stone that is both versatile and unmistakable — equally at home as an engagement ring centre stone, a pendant drop, or a pair of earrings.

The shape dates to the mid-fifteenth century, when Flemish cutter Lodewyk van Berquem developed the pendeloque — the precursor to the modern pear. Today's version inherits the round brilliant's facet arrangement, modified to follow an asymmetric girdle outline: one end tapers to a point, the other curves into a smooth arc. The result is a modified brilliant cut with 58 facets that delivers strong light return while offering an elongated appearance that maximises perceived size on the finger.

Because GIA does not assign cut grades to fancy shapes, evaluating a pear demands more from the buyer than selecting a round. Proportions and Length-to-Width Ratio

The length-to-width (L:W) ratio defines whether a pear looks classically tapered or awkwardly compressed.

Most buyers find pears most balanced between 1.50:1 and 1.75:1. A ratio of 1.55:1 to 1.65:1 is often considered the sweet spot — distinctly elongated without appearing stretched. Below 1.50:1, the outline starts to lose its teardrop character and resembles a rounded triangle. Above 2.00:1, the stone looks narrow and fragile, and the bow-tie effect intensifies.

Depth and table influence light performance. Total depth of 56–66% is a workable range for pears; stones above 67% tend to hide weight beneath the girdle. Table percentages of 52–62% are typical. As with all fancy shapes, these are guidelines — visual assessment under real lighting conditions remains the final word.

Symmetry

Symmetry is more critical in a pear shape than in almost any other diamond. The outline is inherently asymmetric — one end is pointed, the other rounded — which means any deviation from bilateral symmetry along the length axis is immediately obvious.

Evaluate four things:

  1. Point-to-apex alignment. Draw an imaginary line from the point to the centre of the rounded end. If the point drifts left or right of that axis, the stone will look crooked in any setting.
  2. Wing balance. The two curved shoulders on either side of the point should mirror each other in shape and size. Uneven wings create a lopsided appearance that no setting can disguise.
  3. Smooth curvature. The belly of each wing should follow a continuous arc. Flat spots or angular transitions break the teardrop illusion and suggest less precise cutting.
  4. Rounded end shape. The curved end should form a clean semicircle. If it flattens or becomes slightly pointed, the pear loses its characteristic silhouette.

The symmetry grade on a GIA report evaluates facet placement, not outline shape. A stone can receive a "Very Good" symmetry grade while still having slightly uneven wings. Always inspect the outline visually.

The Bow-Tie Effect

Like ovals and marquises, pear shapes exhibit a bow-tie — a darker zone running across the width of the stone near its centre. It occurs because pavilion facets in the mid-section leak light downward rather than reflecting it to the viewer.

Severity varies:

  • Mild: A subtle contrast that adds depth. Many well-cut pears show a gentle bow-tie that enhances visual interest.
  • Moderate: Visible when you look for it but not dominant. Most commercial pears fall here.
  • Severe: A dark band that draws the eye before anything else. This typically indicates poor proportioning in the pavilion angles.

Bow-tie severity cannot be assessed from still photographs or from any measurement on a grading report. Evaluate it from video or in person, tilting the stone through multiple angles. Colour

Body colour behaves differently in pear shapes than in rounds. The longer light path through the tapered point concentrates colour there — a stone graded H may appear colourless through its rounded end while showing a faint warm tint at the tip.

For buyers seeking a colourless appearance in white gold or platinum, consider selecting one colour grade higher than you would for a round brilliant. Clarity

The pear's brilliant-cut facet pattern works in the buyer's favour. Triangular and kite-shaped facets scatter light and break up internal reflections, making inclusions harder to spot than in step cuts. VS2 and SI1 grades are frequently eye-clean in pear shapes.

One area demands extra attention: the point. Because the tip tapers to a thin edge, any inclusion positioned there creates a structural concern — the concentrated stress at the point makes the stone more vulnerable to chipping during setting or wear. Avoid stones with feathers, crystals, or chips located at or near the point. Inclusions under the table or along the belly of the wings are far less consequential. Setting Considerations

The pear's defining feature — its point — is also its most vulnerable area. A V-prong or chevron prong at the tip is essential. This style of prong wraps the point in metal, protecting it from impact that could cause chipping along the thin edge.

Popular setting styles include:

  • Solitaire: A five-prong configuration — one V-prong at the point, four round prongs along the curves — is the classic choice. It secures the stone while letting the outline remain fully visible.
  • Halo: A contour-matched halo of smaller diamonds follows the pear's asymmetric outline, amplifying perceived size. The halo must mirror the pear's curves precisely, or the mismatch becomes distracting.
  • Three-stone: Smaller pear, round, or tapered baguette side stones complement the centre. Matching pear-shaped sides require careful symmetry pairing.
  • Pendant and earrings: The teardrop silhouette is a natural fit for pendant necklaces and drop earrings, where it catches light with every movement.

Orientation

Pear-shaped engagement rings are traditionally worn with the point facing toward the fingertip. This orientation elongates the finger visually and creates a slimming effect — one of the pear's most cited aesthetic advantages.

Point-down orientation — with the rounded end toward the fingertip — is less conventional but growing in popularity. It creates a softer, more organic appearance and can feel more modern. Neither orientation is superior; it is purely a matter of personal preference. Try both before committing to a setting style, as the orientation is determined by how the ring is constructed.
