Introduction
The princess cut is the square diamond that refused to compromise on brilliance. Developed in the late 1970s as a modified brilliant, it brought the light performance of the round brilliant into a geometric, angular form — and in doing so became the most popular fancy shape in the market.
Where step cuts play with broad planes of light, the princess fractures light into the same complex pattern of brilliance, fire, and scintillation that makes the round dominant. It simply does it in a square. And it does it efficiently: princess cuts retain approximately 80% of the rough crystal, compared to roughly 50% for rounds. That translates to better value per carat.

Cutting Style and Chevron Patterns
The princess cut uses a modified brilliant facet arrangement on a square or near-square outline. The crown features a table and kite-shaped facets similar to a round brilliant. The pavilion is where the princess distinguishes itself: a series of chevron-shaped facets radiating from the culet toward the corners.
The number of chevron rows on each pavilion side — typically two, three, or four — is the single most important variable in a princess cut's optical character.
- Two chevrons per side: Fewer, larger facets produce bold, blocky flashes. The sparkle has a graphic, architectural quality, and the larger facet surfaces generate more fire (spectral colour dispersion).
- Three chevrons per side: The most common configuration. A balanced mix of bold flashes and fine sparkle that appeals to the widest range of buyers.
- Four chevrons per side: More facets create finer, more scattered scintillation — the stone shimmers rather than flashes. Four-chevron stones also hide inclusions more effectively because the fragmented light pattern provides greater visual distraction.
There is no superior chevron count — it is purely a matter of how you want the stone to handle light.
Proportions
The princess cut's geometry centres on a few critical measurements.
Length-to-Width Ratio
- True square (1.00–1.05:1): The classic princess. Equal or near-equal dimensions produce a balanced, symmetrical outline. This is what most buyers expect and what most settings are designed for.
- Near-square (1.05–1.10:1): A slight elongation most people will not notice face-up, but it can affect fit in settings designed for exact square dimensions.
- Rectangular (above 1.10:1): Deliberately rectangular. Less common and less in demand. Above 1.15:1, a radiant cut may suit the proportions better.

Depth and Table
Total depth typically falls between 65% and 75%. The 68–72% range tends to balance brilliance with face-up size well. Table percentage generally runs 62–70%.

Corner Protection
This is where the princess cut demands attention that no other popular shape requires. The four sharp, uncut corners are the stone's most vulnerable feature. Diamond is the hardest natural material, but it cleaves — and corners concentrate mechanical stress at a point.
A sharp corner concentrates stress at a single point. Any impact directs force there rather than distributing it across a curved edge. If an inclusion sits at or near a corner, the risk multiplies — the inclusion provides a fracture plane that can propagate a chip from even a minor knock.
Setting solutions:
- V-prongs: The standard. Each corner is cradled in a metal V that absorbs impact before it reaches the diamond.
- Bezel setting: A full or partial bezel provides the strongest protection — the best choice for active lifestyles.
- Channel setting: Metal rails protect the corners while straight edges of adjacent princess cuts sit flush, with no gaps between stones.
Never set a princess cut in a standard four-prong basket that grips the sides rather than the corners. The exposed points invite damage.
Colour
The princess cut's brilliant faceting breaks up body colour, making the stone appear whiter face-up than its grade might suggest. You can typically step down one to two colour grades compared to a round brilliant without visible difference.
- D–F: Colourless. Necessary only for buyers who insist on absolutely neutral colour in any lighting and any setting.
- G–H: The sweet spot for most buyers. Face-up white in white metal settings. A G princess is often indistinguishable from an E without laboratory instruments.
- I–J: A trace of warmth becomes visible in some lighting conditions, but reads as attractive and intentional in yellow or rose gold settings.
- K and below: Visible warmth. Can work beautifully in yellow gold if the buyer prefers a warmer aesthetic.

Clarity
The princess cut's modified brilliant pattern scatters light across many facets, drawing the eye away from internal characteristics.
- VS2: Eye-clean in virtually all princess cuts. A safe choice for buyers who want peace of mind without paying the premium for higher grades.
- SI1: Eye-clean in the majority of princess cuts. At this grade, the savings compared to VS can be substantial — and the difference invisible to the naked eye.
- SI2: Requires individual assessment. Some SI2 princess cuts are clean face-up; others show visible inclusions, particularly under the table. Higher chevron counts (three or four) help mask SI2 inclusions better than two-chevron configurations.
The corner exception: Regardless of grade, avoid inclusions that sit at or near the corners. A feather, knot, or crystal at a corner does not just affect appearance — it creates a structural weakness. The inclusion provides a fracture path, and what would be a cosmetic flaw elsewhere on the stone becomes a durability risk at the corners. - Halo: A contour-matched halo amplifies perceived size and frames the square outline. The halo should follow the square shape; a round halo undermines the geometry.
- Three-stone: A princess centre flanked by smaller princess, trapezoid, or baguette side stones creates a bold, architectural composition.
- Invisible setting: Multiple princess cuts set with no visible metal between them create a seamless mosaic of brilliance — possible only because of the shape's straight edges and right-angle corners.
